Podcast interview with Marc Kern, PhD

Wise Counsel Podcast - Dr. Van Nuys speaks with Psychologist Marc Kern, Ph.D. on the topic of addiction treatment with an emphasis on alternatives to Alcoholics Anonymous and twelve step programs. Dr. Kern became interested in treating addictions as a result of his own experience dealing with addictions that he had developed while in college.
It is no secret that drug or alcohol addiction can damage the body and impair the mind. The good news is that with proper medical treatment, counseling and stopping use, these wounds heal over time. However, the damage that addiction causes to important relationships is enormous and very hard to restore.

Understanding Addiction

Addictions come in all shapes and forms. Difficult to define exactly, it has become popular to think of almost any behavior that has a compulsive quality as an "addiction." But for those who have an addiction, or for those affected by the addiction of a loved one or close friend, it's clear what an addiction means in "real" terms.
Many addicts are unwilling to give up their addiction. Their goal is to continue their addiction moderately and get it under control, without letting it control them. For many, this is an unachievable goal and often wishful thinking. For many addicts, recovery requires complete and lifetime abstinence. But for others, moderation and control may be an appropriate and realistic goal.
Kimberly Young first coined the term in 1997 "Internet addiction" and it's very catchy. But if you use our offline criteria for examining whether it's an addiction, our behavior is actually a compulsion not an addiction. An addiction requires a substance.
